Styles Of Wine Now Available
Kathleen Quealy once again has made a range of wines that are
a tribute to her imagination and innovation.
Balnarring Vineyard, already with a winemaker's reputation for
superb Pinot Noir, has now harvested the first vintage of two
important new grape varieties. They are Tocai
Friulano which is grown throughout Northern Italian
regions and shares the high status of Pinot Grigio,
and Muscat Giallo. Winemaker Kathleen Quealy
has included the harvest in her 2007 Pobblebonk
Pobblebonk is a style of her own, a composition
of Pinot Grigio, Tocai Friulano, Chardonnay and
Riesling. Each variety has yielded a significant

dimension. Grigio has supplied the honey aroma
and full middle palate. Chardonnay has contributed
a lovely buttery malolactic character. The Riesling is typically
aristocratic very fine and beautifully perfumed. Tocai Friulano adds
what Kathleen describes as a chicken stock dimension; a fragrant
and textural base to build a great wine upon.
These composite wines are called Super Whites in Italy. It is
a traditional winemaking style, with an aim to making naturally
complex wines.
Quealy Rageous is a new look at Mornington Peninsula
Red wine. It is very ripe,
rich, beautifully structured
medium bodied wine.
It is reminiscent of a
Chianti style. Rageous is
composed of Sangiovese,
Shiraz, Pinot Noir and
a smidgen of Merlot.
And why did Kathleen
make it? Sangiovese and
Shiraz are a dream to co
ferment because their
natural states compliment
each other. There is no
need to add acid to tip
the balance. Voluptuous
but vulnerable Pinot
Noir is enveloped in the
substantial structure of
Sangiovese Shiraz. The
1% Merlot was for good
measure.
Quealy Muscat is
luscious and lovely.
Because it is the rare and valuable Muscat a Petite Grains Rouge,
Pobblebonk a Pinot Grigio Blend
the berries collapse rather than rot, concentrating the flavours and
extract to make a remarkable rich dessert wine, with a refreshingly
Rageous combining sangiovese
low alcohol.

There is more in the pipe line. Kathleen is looking forward to
releasing her 2007 Earl's Ridge Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.
